In These Tough Times

I had to make an executive decision today: I am not going to go see Punch Brothers at the State Room on monday so I can afford to see The Swell Season on Sunday.

Contenders

So my tenure present to myself is going to be a nice guitar. Here are the contenders so far:

Taylor 414CE: I took the train down to SLC this afternoon and played a limited edition of this guitar (made of walnut!) that was quite simply the best sounding guitar in the house. This is my benchmark.

Breedlove C25: My local shop is a Breedlove dealer, and they have several impressive instruments. I have not played this particular guitar, but I have played both its cheaper version and its 12-string version. If the C25 sounds as good as the 12-string, I may have to snatch one up.

Collings OM2: This is a cute little guitar with a ridiculous bass response for its size; I’m not sure it’s worth the price, though.

Townes

Watching Crazy Heart tonight, I was reminded of the phenomenal Austin City Limits tribute to Townes van Zandt—and particularly two songs. In the first one, Steve Earle makes Nanci Griffith cry.

In the second, which occurs right after the Earle song, she clearly comes close to crying again (at about 4:00) only to pull it back in time to sing:

There are only a handful of artists I wish I could discover again for the first time. Nanci Griffith is one of them.

Watch This Space

I just got back from SLC where I saw Laura Marling. This girl is 20. These songs are amazing, and even though they were pretty burned out at the end of their tour, the show was great.

Make sure you watch the other videos.

The opening act/bandmate (it’s so hard to tell these days), Pete Roe, put on a stunningly good show.
