The word “penultimate” means “next to last.” It doesn’t mean “really ultimate.” It doesn’t mean “super ultimate.” It doesn’t even mean “ultimate ultimate.”

It means “next to last.”

    That and the misuse of “crescendo” drive me absolutely batshit.

    Also, “preantepenultimate” is a fantastic word.

    First year college Greek taught me that one. Something I can use, still. Since I forgot all the Greek.

    Melinda: In a footnote in one of the Jane Austen novels I’m teaching this semester, the word “antepenultimate” appears. My students were baffled. I thought it was hysterical.

    Suzi: Alas, no Greek for me. Just Latin, which I have also forgotten. ;)
